FMR India Asha Niketan, Nandi Bazar is a Home of Hope where men and women with intellectual disabilities, who are often marginalized by their families and society, are provided with a dignified place to live and grow. The community is committed to creating an environment that enables each individual to develop their potential and contribute their unique gifts for the well-being of others.
Asha Niketan Nandi Bazar was established on August 6, 1977, by Chris Sadler, with Jayamithran—rescued from a mental asylum—as the first core member. It is a community where home and work are shared with adults with intellectual disabilities, fostering dignity, inclusion, and mutual support.
It was the fourth such community in India, following those in Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, and Asansol. Collectively, these communities are registered as the Fellowship with the Mentally Retarded, India (FMR India).
Make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities through mutually transforming relationships. Foster an environment in the community that responds to the changing needs of our members whilst being faithful to the core values of our founding story. Engage in our diverse cultures, working together towards a more human society.
We are people with and without intellectual disabilities, sharing life in communities. Mutual Relationships and trust in God are at the heart of our journey together. We celebrate the unique value of every person and recognize our need for one another.
