Asha Niketan was founded by Chris Sadler, inspired by a deep faith in God and a conviction that people labelled as “handicapped” possess unique and precious gifts. The vision of Asha Niketan is closely linked to the spirit of L’Arche, which began in France in 1964, and to the Asha Niketan community that first took shape in Bangalore in 1970 under the guidance of Gabrielle. This shared dream was rooted in love, respect, and the belief in inclusive community life.
The journey of Asha Niketan in Nandi Bazaar unfolded through two significant moments inspired by God—in 1972 and again in 1976. After reading about Asha Niketan, Bangalore, Mr. Premanand recalled his father’s wish that the holy hill of Sri Shaila should become a place where the poor and rejected could live, grow, and find peace. He offered land at Nandi Bazaar for a new Asha Niketan community. On December 8, 1976, Chris Sadler walked onto this land in the early hours of the morning and entrusted the future of the community to God—then only a small seed, full of uncertainty and hope.
On August 6, 1977, the community life at Asha Niketan, Nandi Bazaar formally began when a small group climbed Sri Shaila carrying oil lamps. Over the years, the community grew through the dedication of many—faithful workers, families, governing members, builders, doctors, and spiritual guides from different faith traditions. At the heart of Asha Niketan are the people welcomed into the community, whose lives and gifts shaped its spirit. Through shared work, daily care, patience, friendship, and faith, Asha Niketan continues to live out its founding vision as a community of dignity, belonging, and hope.
